There are a number of outstanding authorities and organizations that support historic preservation throughout the world. Here are some which we feel are particularly useful and important.

PRESERVATION PARTNERSHIPS

The following are the principle Lancaster County organizations whose missions include historic preservation, land conservation and growth management:

  • City of Lancaster

  • Lancaster County Planning Commission
    The Lancaster County Planning Commission (LCPC) is the only agency that comprehensively addresses county-wide planning issues. The Commission combines county policies with federal and state planning responsibilities to support the application of county-wide plans for the future.

  • Lancaster County Conservancy
    A private, nonprofit membership organization, the Conservancy's mission is to preserve and protect rapidly diminishing open space and natural lands in Lancaster County, primarily for public recreation and educational use.

  • Lancaster Farmland Trust
    One of the foremost agricultural land preservation organizations in the United States, the Lancaster Farmland Trust is a private, nonprofit organization working to preserve the rich and productive farmland of Lancaster County.

  • Coalition for Smart Growth
    A unique and diverse group of community organizations and individuals drawn together by a shared interest in the future direction of Lancaster County.

    Lancaster County's Historical Society and James Buchanan's Wheatland
    To educate the public about the heritage and history of the people, places and events that shaped our region, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the United States of America.

  • The Historic Lancaster Walking Tour
    Did you know that Lancaster was once the capital of the U.S.? Have you heard of the Conestoga rifle or the Conestoga Wagon? Can you name any famous local citizens who were instrumental in forging the development of our country? Come to Lancaster and we'll tell you.

  • Lancaster County Agricultural Preserve Board
    A department of Lancaster County government, the Agricultural Preserve Board's mission is to forever preserve the beautiful farmland and productive soil of Lancaster County. Recognizing the importance of the County's rich agricultural heritage, the Board acts to create a healthy agricultural environment for the long-term sustainability of the agricultural economy and farming as a way of life.

  • Heritage Center Museum of Lancaster County
    A nonprofit museum located in the heart of historic Penn Square in Downtown Lancaster, the Heritage Center Museum of Lancaster County is dedicated to the collection, preeservation and interpretation of Lancaster County decorative arts. The center maintains a permanent collection, stages annual exhibitions and conducts extensive educational programs.

  • Lancaster County Building and Industry Association
    The Lancaster County BIA is a well-respected association of local builders, developers and contractors. The trust welcomes our relationship with this organization whose members provide much of the knowledge and expertise in helping restore and rehabilitate many historic properties in Lancaster County.

  • Lancaster County Heritage
    A partnership between the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County, the County of Lancaster and the Pennsylvania Dutch Convention and Visitors Bureau that seeks to enhance community pride in local heritage resources and provide a diversity of authentic heritage experiences for both residents and visitors. Heritage resources include historic sites and museums, heritage services and heritage events.

  • Haldeman Mansion Preservation Society
    It's mission is to preserve and interpret the birthplace of Samuel Steman Haldeman by restoring its architecture and communicating its history.

  • Hourglass Foundation
    The Hourglass Foundation was established to protect the distinct character of Lancaster County and to ensure its proud legacy for future generations by bringing people together, connecting citizens, organizations, communities and governtment to discuss issues and solve growth-related problems.

  • Leave A Legacy - The gift of a lifetime
    This is a collaboration between nonprofit organizations, businesses, attorneys, accountants, estate planners, media representatives and civic-minded volunteers to educate the public and promote the concept of charitable giving through bequests and estate plans.

    It's mission it to restore historical buildings within the National Historic District of the Borough of Strasburg, PA

  • Historic Manheim Preservation Foundation
    The Historic Manheim Preservation Foundation is a not-for-profit organization seeking to promote the preservation of America's heritage and particularly the local heritage of the greater Manheim area.

    • 10,000 Friends of Pennsylvania
      An alliance of organizations and individuals committed to enhancing the quality of life for all Pennsylvanians through responsible land use and the conservation of natural, heritage and fiscal resources.

    • Susquehanna Gateway Heritage Area
      As a designated Pennsylvania Heritage Area, the Susquehanna Gateway Heritage Region helps identify, preserve, interpret and promote the wonderfully rich heritage and culture of Lancaster and York Counties.

    • Preservation Magazine
      Magazine of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Posts a news story about preservation every day along with excerpts from the award-winning magazine.


    • Preservation Pennsylvania
      The statewide advocacy voice for Pennsylvania's heritage.

    • National Trust for Historic Preservation
      The National Trust provides leadership, education and advocacy to save America's diverse historic places and revitalize our communities.

    • Lewis & Clark Heritage Trail Foundation - Philadelphia Chapter
      A national foundation dedicated to stimulating public interest and advancing knowledge of the famous expedition of the "Corps of Discovery."
