THE HERITAGE PRESERVATION FUND

The Heritage Preservation Fund is designed to protect and preserve the three centuries of history represented by the built environment around us. We are confident that those who share our love of this area's rich architectural and cultural heritage will help it to endure.

The fund is a capital fund restricted by the Trust to facilitate the acquisition and preservation of historic properties in Lancaster County. The Trust does not intend to hold properties indefinitely. Rather, the focus is to preserve and resell them where they contribute to the economic and social fabric of a community.

The goals of the fund are:

  1. To acquire historic properties via purchases, bargain sale, purchase option, or gift.
  2. Help the trust, acting as sole contractor or in partnership with public or private concerns, rehabilitate and restore historic properties where necessary; or provide cost assistance with historic property rehabilitation including legal, architectural, engineering design, research and documentation, and similar project-related services.
  3. Protect the property via the placement of a historic preservation easement.
  4. Offer restoration training skills on funded projects to students who would apprentice with skilled contractors and artisans, thus developing a continuous pool of talented craftspeople for future preservation projects.
  5. Resell the property to new owners who will abide by the covenants of the easement.
  6. The fund is designed, for the most part, to be revolving in nature where costs are recouped during property resale or through loan repayment and any profit reinvested into subsequent projects.

The Trust has developed a Heritage Preservation Fund loan criteria and application. Please contact the Trust office for a copy.
